Gamer’s laptop should have top graphics performance, a strong processor, fast screen and quality build. Finding all this in a notebook is rather simple if you have enough money to shell out. One example is MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002, the company’s new gaming laptop that promises to offer unprecedented performance and seamless experience for the players – but at what cost? Is this high-end laptop really worth the money, does it offer gamers what they are seeking?

GTX 1070 is Killing It

The meat and potatoes of this MSI laptop is its graphics card, the GeForce GTX 1070 using 8GB of high-speed GDDR5 memory and Max-Q design. Players need not worry, according to a few extensive benchmark tests, it is one of the fastest graphics cards currently available. A few examples include Full HD Ultra settings gaming, where games like Doom, Fallout 4 and Far Cry 4 are in the ~80FPS range or more. Turning up the resolution, the graphics card would think none of it, although the display on this computer puts a limit on the resolution.

Talking about the screen, it is a 15.6 inches 1080p TN panel. The TN (Twisted Nematics) technology allows for fast response time, 3ms in this case which together with 120hz refresh rate effectively removes ghosting. The brightness is set at 400 nits which is fairly bright. The 94% NTSC color profile looks, at least on paper, good and should offer a wide range of colors. G-Sync and touch are not supported on this screen.

Say Hello to Fast Set of Components

In a pricey laptop like this, every thing is well thought of. Also the storage drive section rocks, with a 512GB M.2 SSD and 1024GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive. The manufacturer says the SSD holds operating system which is a smart move – it will boot faster than if it resided on the hard drive part. These drives can be replaced, although someone commented it might be hard to reach the motherboard.

Intel Core i7-7700HQ is the processor all hardcore gamers and power users should be looking at; for it offers a powerful quad-core setup, already high 2.8GHz clock frequency and even higher turbo of 3.8GHz clock speed. There are about zero mobile processors that can pass it in benchmark tests, so if you want the best, this i7 is your best bet. The downside of all this performance would be the measly battery life; a feature all gaming notebooks are notoriously known for.

The memory for this laptop comes on two 16 GB high-speed DDR4 2400MHz sticks, totaling at 32 gigabytes. That is also the maximum RAM the notebook takes; an amount surpassing anyone’s requirements with flying colors.

Ports for Modern Gamer’s Peripherals

The thinness and lightweight of MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 is nowhere to be seen in the ports section. The sides are full of interfaces: starting with USB, you’ll find one USB 2.0, three USB 3.0 and also USB-C/Thunderbolt hybrid there. That is five USB ports in total; most often you don’t get so much in a 15-inch laptop. But the selection of interfaces doesn’t end there: also HDMI (4K @ 60Hz) and miniDisplayPort are offered for external monitor. Word about that; the GTX 1070 should be able to run two extra displays without issues, even if you used them for gaming. Headphone and mic ports are also included, of course.

The lack of optical drive should not come as a surprise for two reasons. First, this is indeed a thin laptop, so space for such a big drive is hard – or impossible – to find. Another reason, not many people install games and programs from discs anymore as they can be conveniently downloaded from Internet. If you insists on disc use, you are always free to buy an external DVD burner and plug it in.

The laptop’s SD card slot should work fine and will come handy for photographers uploading their images from DSLR cameras.

There’s no lack of networking options: at your service is a Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 port for fast (and robust) downloads, and Intel 8265 wireless card sporting long-range, high speed features such 2×2 antenna and 802.11ac standard. Hooking up mobile phone via wireless works too as Bluetooth 4.1 is supported.

Other Things Prospective Buyer Should Know

The common gripe among gamers is always the battery life of their laptops. The components – dedicated graphics card, high-end processor and hard drive – are energy hogs, and the battery (especially on these thin laptops) can only be so big. So, either performance or battery life suffers – and it’s always the latter for gaming notebooks. In this particular model, the 3-cell 57Whr battery will last anything from one to four hours; closer to one hour if gaming, three-four hours if surfing the web. But you are not alone, all the other notebooks intended for gaming have the same problem.

Weighing a measly 3.96 pounds, this is probably the world’s lightest 15.6″ gaming laptop – often these things weight pound or so more. Also the thinness is one selling point which stands at a nice 0.69 inches.

The operating system of this unit is indeed Windows 10 Professional; the “better” version of Home – offering a few extra features such as group policy (easily optimize Windows) and remote desktop (easily access the laptop even if you are away).

The keyboard is backlit and the colors are fully customizable by the user.

Pros:
Beats all in performance - Throw in a GTX 1070, Core i7 and SSD and what will you get? A world-class performance, sufficient for any game you can think of (on Full HD and Ultra settings).

Portability - Often, gaming laptops have suffered from bad portability, but that is not the case with MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002. It's almost like an ultrabook, ready to be carried and traveled with.

Fast display - Slowness in screen is a big enemy for players; but this display is among the fastest you will ever find in gaming laptops. Ghosting won't happen and the image will be clear.

Cons:
It costs - If you can compromise on performance or mobility, you can get a gaming laptop much cheaper than this.

In a word, MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002 is an extremely fast and gaming-ready ultrabook. Its performance – whether for software or gaming – is hard to beat, as GTX 1070 graphics card and Intel Core i7 processor are the two components forming the basis of this notebook. The SSD is also a nice and welcomed addition for faster operating system. With quick response and refresh rate, the screen offers ghosting-free experience even for the fastest of games. Yet, despite all of these features, the laptop will feel like an ultrabook, weighing a mere four pounds. Surely it costs an arm and leg, but if you want to unite these two features – portability and performance – this laptop is the best option you have.
