For many, MSI is the go-to company when one is considering a new gaming notebook. Their G-series laptops are known to possess great gaming performance, and a new addition – the MSI GL62M 7RE-621 – has recently been added to the roster. There are some encouraging reviews the notebook has already gathered, so suitability for gaming should be decent at least. In this review you will find yet another take on the subject – enjoy!

Dedicated Graphics is Where The Money is

A graphics card is what makes or breaks the gaming laptop – if you end up getting a notebook without great graphics, you are totally out of luck with many games. Thankfully, in MSI GL62M 7RE-621 the problem is solved by the dedicated GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4GB GDDR5) card. It’s one product of Nvidia’s newest GTX 1000 graphics engine family, and according to popular technology sites, the GTX 1050 Ti is a new budget gaming champion. Indeed, the card receives positive reviews and does a good job in benchmarks: the same site tested 1080p gaming with Hitman on medium settings and ended up with ~75FPS and Far Cry Primal with ~60FPS. Hence, the GTX 1050 Ti is suitable for Triple A games especially if you don’t mind using “only” medium/normal settings!

TN Panel for Budget Gaming?

Also an important thing for a gamer is the screen; nobody wants lag or bad picture quality on their displays. The screen on this MSI is a 15.6″ inches Full HD non-touch display; indeed the GTX 1050 Ti card does a good job with Full HD but could be questionable on higher resolution screens. It has a TN panel which, as you might know, often has poorer picture quality and worse colors than more prestigious IPS panels. However, the screen is still marketed as having “Vivid Colors” and 94% NTSC color gamut – especially the latter measurement could tell that color reproduction is decent at least. The display is matte type so it’s especially suitable for indoors use.

Engine Room Full of Fast Components

Under the hood, the MSI GL62M 7RE-621 packs a lot of power. For instance, two storage drives are available: a 1TB 7200RPM HDD that will surely take the bulk of your files, and a 128GB M.2 NVMe/PCIe SSD for snappy operations of the notebook. You are free to replace both of the drives, the laptop can be opened up. To my knowledge, operating system lives on the solid-state drive part.

Processor is something you will like for sure, the Intel Core i7-7700HQ with an impressive set-up: four cores, 2.8GHz clock speed and 3.8GHz turbo boost. It is based on the Kaby Lake architecture which is the latest one from Intel, and also the fact it’s i7 makes the processor a fast one. You are free to check out how it compares to other CPUs – I can give you a hint, it’s one of the best processors available right now. A gamer, power user or anyone would find the i7-7700HQ enough for his needs.

There is a single 8GB DDR4 2400MHz memory stick installed on this unit. It’s probably enough for you; however if you feel you need more, do not hesitate to upgrade. The mainboard has two slots, the maximum memory stands at 32 gigabytes.

A Lot of Ports Sprinkled on the Sides

No gaming laptop is complete without an ample connectivity – you might want to hook up a peripheral or two to your notebook. Indeed, the MSI has many ports for you: one USB 2.0, two USB 3.0 and one USB 3.0 Type-C that is becoming a standard in new computers. Those connectors support pretty much anything you might want to connect: a gaming mouse, external drive or even a monitor (thanks to the USB-C technology). However, the spec sheet also lists HDMI 1.4 and MiniDisplayPort 1.2, so you can also directly connect a monitor if you want to!

The Internet connectivity is brought by Qualcomm Atheros AR8171 Ethernet card (a Gigabit RJ-45 port) and a wireless adapter that supports 802.11ac long-range standard and Bluetooth 4.2. Bear in mind the laptop does not have an optical drive so you would need to use an external DVD burner if you worked with discs. A cheerful thing is the internal media card reader which will eat SD and SDHC cards; they are the cards on your digital camera where photos are saved.

Miscellaneous Things About the Laptop

As for the battery, you will be receiving a 6-cell integrated unit. While it might look like a strong one to your eye, remember that dedicated graphics, hard drive and a high-end processor will require energy, a lot. So, the situation is same than in other gaming laptops of this caliber: three-four hours when you are not gaming, and just an hour or so under gameplay. There’s not much you can do but accept the fact, it’s common for all notebooks intended for gaming.

Keep in mind the case is made of plastic; it might not look as premium as aluminum to your eye. The keyboard does not have lights which might be an obvious con to some people.

The pre-installed operating system is Windows 10 Home (64-bit).

Gaming on budget - For the price you get a full-blown gaming notebook with GeForce GTX 1050 Ti which is one of the best budget graphics cards.

Popular brand - MSI is one of the most popular gaming laptop brands; you are bound to receive a quality piece of electronics.

Two storage drives - Having a hard drive and solid-state drive means both storage and performance requirements are covered.

Screen, possibly - It's not a high-end IPS panel you are getting so don't expect the best possible colors from this laptop. However, also consider how much you are paying - you can't get everything for so good price.

No keyboard backlight - Can you type in the dark?

MSI GL62M 7RE-621 is a 2017-ready gaming laptop to the bone. Its strengths lie in the graphics and overall performance section, where GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card and Intel Core i7 processor are working hard to keep your games and applications running lag-free and Windows booting up fast. The TN panel might have questionable image quality for display aficionados, yet for gamers it should offer fast enough refresh rates. The lack of illuminated keyboard could be bothersome if you will be using the laptop a lot in the dark. Other than that, I have no complaints about this MSI gaming system!
