To buy a laptop or desktop for gaming, that is the age-old question. The obvious advantage of a notebook is its portability; you can play anywhere you want. But the advantage of desktop is better price-performance ratio – you get more bang for your buck, perhaps better frame rates so. One company, iBUYPOWER, is solely concentrating on creating well-priced gaming desktops. In this review, I’ll tell you more about their new product, the AM901Z rig.

For Full Full HD Gaming Experience

The single most important component for gamer, the graphics card, makes or breaks gaming desktop. Well, this iBUYPOWER does well in the graphics front as GeForce GTX 1060 (3GB GDDR5) is installed in it. Yes, it’s the “budget” version of GTX 1060 with less memory, but the difference to the version with double the RAM is just three or so frames per second. It’s safe to say this card is all you need for 1080p gaming, even higher resolution would work but you’d have to make cutbacks on the settings. The card is also Virtual Reality ready, so you can use Oculus Rift and similar products.

General Performance In Check As Well

The iBUYPOWER AM901Z runs on a four-core Intel i7-7700 processor, with base clock speed a sweet 3.6GHz and turbo shockingly high 4.2GHz. Originating from the beginning of 2017, it is still one of the fastest processors available, with excellent price-performance ratio for gaming. The high clock speeds with multi-core setup make it also ideal for multitasking; ie. gaming while zipping/unzipping big files.

The memory comes on a single 8GB DDR4 stick. Being quite alright for a gamer, some might also want more. There is one free memory slot for adding extra memory, so the most RAM you can put here is sixteen gigabytes – surely enough even for the most demanding of gamers.

The storage drive section consists of an old school 1TB 7200RPM hard drive. Being big as it is, dozens of games can be installed on such HDD without problems. If you want to install more drives, it can be done on the free 3.5″ slots inside the case – the motherboard has free SATA ports as well. There is no M.2 slot on the mainboard as far as I know.

A Few Ports To Get You Going

There are display connectors for at least DVI and HDMI, so using a two monitor setup will be possible. It’s also worthy of mentioning the GTX 1060 card has enough oomph for gaming on two screens. In addition to those ports, there are four USB 4.0 and two USB 2.0 to connect your peripherals. No USB-C is found on this iBUYPOWER, it seems to be a thing in the company.

A Gigabit Ethernet port is naturally provided to keep you connected to Internet, without disruptions, with high speed. The desktop also ships with a 802.11ac WiFi adapter – you plug that in to the computer’s USB port and you get wireless support that way, too.

Quite strangely, the desktop does not come with an optical drive, the only disadvantage I can think of. You will need to use an external drive should you want to operate discs. There’s also no memory card reader as far as I know.

A Couple Of Other Things To Mention

Operating system is Windows 10 Home 64-bit, a pre-loaded version on the storage drive. Included are also a backlit keyboard and gaming mouse.

Guaranteed gaming performance - The GTX 1060 3GB version is enough for modern gaming on 1080p resolution and high settings, no questions asked. Smooth frame rates are waiting for you, and you don't have to compromise on the in-game settings.

Upgradeable - You can open up the case and put in more RAM or upgrade the hard drive.

Looks neat - With the blue light inside and one window open, the desktop looks like it was made for hardcore gaming.

None? - There seems to be nothing wrong with the specifications, and also user reviews don't find anything big to complain about. It doesn't have optical drive, the only thing I can think of.

It might make one peculiar as why iBUYPOWER AM901Z is so affordable compared to many other gaming desktops. Well, after reading the specifications and user reviews, there should be no doubt this rig is a quality piece of electronics. Thanks to GTX 1060 and Core i7 processor, games you throw at it will be ran smoothly – and that is with high resolution and in-game settings. Plus, like in a real gaming desktop, one side of the computer is open, revealing the lit insides through a window. If you want to keep on gaming without paying an arm and leg, a desktop like this iBUYPOWER should be your go-to choice.
