Gigabyte might not be the most popular brand when you think about laptops. Many people recognize this Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer from motherboards, but they also create notebooks with great success. One proof is the Gigabyte P55Wv7-KL3, a recent gaming laptop that has in a short time span received mostly praising reviews and hype. This post is yet another take on the laptop’s features and benefits it may offer for you!

Graphics Well Taken Care Of

The graphics of this laptop are commanded by GeForce GTX 1060, a VR ready 6GB GDDR5 dedicated graphics card. It has been praised as having outstanding performance, with 1080p high/ultra gaming giving over 60FPS for games such as Doom and The Witcher 3. Evidently, the GTX 1060 card would also suffice for higher resolution gaming, although the limit on this laptop’s screen wont allow for more than Full HD. Nonetheless, the graphics engine itself is stellar and will deal with any current or upcoming Triple A game for sure.

The laptop’s 15.6″ screen runs at a maximum of 1080p resolution. Some people find it to be a thing of the past, yet also many high-end gaming laptops still swear by the name of Full HD. Anyway, for an average gamer that’s all you need, and do not forget the other goodies this display offers. You’ll get IPS panel which often produces colors more accurately as cheaper TN panels, also viewing angles will be wide (around 178 degrees). The refresh rate of this model is 60hz and G-Sync is not available.

An Effective Performance Department

Inside the shell you will find two storage drives. One is a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, second is a 256GB M.2 SATA 3 solid-state drive. Needless to say, such a configuration is wonderful because it offers a huge storage space and performance at the same time. Gigabyte has installed operating system – Windows 10 Home – on the solid-state drive for even better performance. Both drives can be replaced.

Processor being Intel Core i7-7700HQ you can only expect speedy operations and fast response times from the P55Wv7-KL3 laptop. It is Intel’s 7th generation processor, belonging to the i7 series which is the best one they have to offer. Indeed, the chip runs on four cores and offers a 2.8GHz clock speed, and the performance is momentarily increased with the 3.8GHz turbo boost. In short, the i7-7700HQ is currently (Summer 2017) the best laptop processor readily available.

The notebook enjoys 16GB DDR4 2400MHz memory by default. It is upgradeable to 32GB since the mainboard has two slots all in all.

Has a Lot of Ports

Connectors are the way to enhance your laptop’s basic functionality. Thankfully, the sides of this Gigabyte are full of ports. Starting with USB, there are three regular USB-A 3.0 connectors with one USB 3.1 Type-C port. You can use the USB-C for hooking up an extra monitor, although there are also full-sized HDMI and mini DisplayPort for your external display needs. A headphone/mic port also exists. All in all, a great selection of connectors I’d say.

The networking options are usual. You can choose the Gigabit LAN port, or opt for the 802.11ac WiFi adapter. The wireless card supports Bluetooth 4.2 as well so you may transfer files from your phone easily.

A DVD burner in 2017 laptop is not a common sight. Yet, Gigabyte decided to include one here so you could install older games and software from discs. Also available is an SD card slot; feel free to hook up the memory card from your digital camera to that.

Battery Life Similar to Competitors

Gigabyte P55Wv7-KL3 includes a 6-cell 63Wh battery which, by the cell count and Whr amount, looks a long-lasting one. However, the dedicated graphics card, quad-core processor and conventional hard drive will suck up the energy quite fast. That is why, under gameplay, you won’t get more than hour or hour and half operating time. Switching to web browsing and the like, the battery will run for around three hours before recharge. There is not much you can do: the unit is integrated and a short battery life is the downside of all gaming notebooks anyway.

Other Things to Note

The notebook is made of plastic but don’t let that put you down. It doesn’t look cheap at all, and the profile is bearable at 1.1″ height.

There is a backlight feature on the keyboard with a single color.

One fan is installed inside the system. The graphics card and processor share it, which means that the GPU might get a tad hot under heavy use.

Pros:
Only smooth frames - The dedicated graphics card, with the help of an i7 processor and solid-state drive, provides a high-performance engine for new games and complex software alike.

IPS display - The 1080p resolution with IPS panel always translates to sharp image and fulfilling colors.

Not bad price - Considering the performance, a Full HD IPS display and GeForce GTX 1060 the price of this machine is very tolerable.

Cons:
Battery life doesn't inspire - No gaming laptop runs for hours, including the Gigabyte. They are not the best choices for active traveling where power sockets are rare.

Fan noise under load - There has been several reports that under intense gaming, the fan can get noisy. People have been using headphones to combat the issue.

The main job of Gigabyte P55Wv7-KL3 is to play games smooth and without hiccups. Reading user reports and looking at the specifications sheet, I am positive the laptop does its job well, very well. People have been thanking the notebook for its gaming performance, and the GTX 1060 card indeed tackles Triple A games you throw at it. The 7th generation i7 processor is a good aid, and the SSD will partly make sure loading times are kept at a minimum. The selection of ports is also large with several video connectors and USB-C. The two complaints I have would be the bane of all gaming laptops: the battery life and possible noise from the fan. If you can bear them, and want a proper gaming laptop that doesn’t dig deep into your pockets, you might want to choose this Gigabyte.
